It is common for an automotive technician to run into problems with rounded bolt heads. Perhaps someone used a twelve point socket or the wrong size socket causing the deformation of the bolt. He might have even over tightened the bolt or worse yet, someone else did.
GearWrench has a solution. We have been selling the Bolt Biters for about a year now. This is what we have learned.
Hammer on:
Although the GearWrench literature shows the technician using an impact gun to remove the bolt, we found that hammering the bolt biter on first and then using a long ratchet to remove it is better.
When an impact gun is used the removal socket is unable to grip the bolt causing more problems. The bolt is rounded more and the bolt biter may be damaged. Sure it might work to just use the impact gun, but don’t risk it.
Putting the Bolt Back on:
Other rounded bolt extractors can only take the bolt off, but the GearWrench Bolt Biter ™ can put the bolt back on. If and when a replacement bolt can’t be found, Bolt Biter can be used to put the fastener back on.
Bolt Biter Sets:
The GearWrench 84783 (KDT84783 or KDT-84783) 3/8” drive extractors from 7/16 through 1/2” drive 7/8”. That is from 11mm to 19mm with mid-points in between. For instance there is a 86072 extractor in between 18mm and 19mm.
