Why buy a Quick Chuck Adapter for brake lathes? Customers with brake lathes need to justify a large purchase, and here are some of the justifications / reasons:
The adapter provides a better cut for drums and rotors compared to the standard cone and spacer approach. Some customers may be missing cones or need more cones for their machine (Aamco, FMC, Accuturn, Hunter, and more). Rather than buy expensive cones, they will choose the Quick Chuck Adapter.
The Quick Chuck Adapter minimizes run-out and automatically centers the rotor or drum on the arbor. The extra weight will also lessen the chatter creating a smoother cut.
The standard adapter will include the chuck, a backing plate, and a key to tighten the jaws. This configuration will fit most vehicles and trucks. The large jaws (optional and sold separately) will fit the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma, along with other large hole drums and rotors.
Some shops will own two adapters; one for trucks, with the larger jaws, and another one for most cars. Rather than swapping out the jaws, the technician will just pick up the appropriate adapter.
