Back in the 1990s the Power Probe Company located in Southern California started producing premium logic probes with a power source and ground. With the flip of a button their power probe could apply power or a ground to a circuit location.
If the technician doesn’t apply the button at the circuit location, an LED indicates whether the source is a ground or carries a current. They improved their product adding a voltmeter in their third iteration of the product (Power Probe III).
Unlike a regular test light, the Power Probes all hooked up directly to the battery. A long wire allowed the technician to study circuits throughout the vehicle from the engine compartment to the trunk.
Their new invention is “The Hook.” The company says diagnostics got easier because The Hook selects the correct meter and range with the “Smart Tip Advantage.” The technician can still power components with the flip of a switch.
Not only can the meter measure volts and ohms, it can display current up to 99 amps.
