History of the Modern Impact Wrench

Humans may have been using air to do work since before the birth of Christ.  While the Greeks used wind and steam, experimenters began considering compressed air in the 1600s.

In the modern era (since the 1970s), Ingersoll Rand has been the preferred air tool of the automotive technician.  They have been experimenting with impact wrenches since 1934.  The IR 231 is considered their classic air gun, and according to the company began production in the 1980s (more than 25 years ago).

Automotive technicians continually demanded more power, so the company designed the IR 244.  This impact had a noticeable hump / ridge on the top of the gun.   Both the IR 231 and 244 had a zerk fitting for lubrication.

In the 1990s the company began experimenting with composite materials to provide a lightweight but powerful solution.  The IR2131 was born.

But Ingersoll Rand didn’t stop there.  Their newest ½ impact gun is the IR 2135TiMax.  The Ti stands for Titanium.  The company also manufactured a quiet version – the 2135QTiMax.  We have noticed that the muffler – near the exhaust – can plug up.  The company told us that the filter/muffler can be cleaned easily and replaced.  So if you notice your quiet version lose power, you know what to do.

The 2135TiMAX provides 780 foot-lbs (ft-lbs) of torque in reverse, where you need it the most.  It weighs less than four pounds and has a feather-touch trigger.  Power can also be easily regulated.

We sell the IR2135TiMax on this website – Click Here.  The IR2135TiMax currently has a 2-year warranty when the customer sends in a registration card – otherwise there is a one-year warranty.
